Mixing vs Mastering: What’s the Difference and Do You Need Both?

Mixing and mastering are often mentioned together, but they solve different problems. Understanding the distinction helps artists know what they are paying for and prevents mastering from being treated as a repair service for an unfinished mix.

What happens during mixing?

Mixing works with the individual elements of a song: lead vocals, backing vocals, drums, bass, instruments, effects and production layers. The engineer balances levels, shapes tone, manages dynamics, creates space and builds a coherent stereo presentation.

What happens during mastering?

Mastering begins after the mix is complete. It works primarily with the finished stereo mix and prepares it for release by refining overall tonal balance, dynamics, playback translation and final delivery specifications.

Can mastering fix a bad mix?

Only to a limited extent. If a lead vocal is buried beneath an instrument or one snare is excessively harsh, the mastering engineer cannot control those individual elements as precisely as the mix engineer can.

Do you need both?
