Recording acoustic drums is one of the most technically demanding forms of studio tracking because one performance is captured through several microphones at the same time. The quality of the final tracks depends on the instrument, player, room and engineering working together.
Start with the drum kit
A recording cannot fully rescue a poorly tuned or noisy kit. Drum heads, tuning, cymbals, pedals, stands and unwanted rattles all affect the captured sound.
The drummer matters as much as the microphones
Consistent dynamics, timing and touch determine how naturally the kit balances. A strong player can make engineering easier before processing begins.
Microphones have different jobs
Kick, snare, toms, overheads and room microphones can each capture a different perspective. The exact setup depends on the music and desired sound rather than a fixed microphone count.
Phase relationships matter
Several microphones hear the same drum at slightly different times. Placement must therefore be checked carefully. Poor phase relationships can remove low end or make drums sound thin.
Gain staging and monitoring
Drums can produce sharp transient peaks, so the engineer needs enough headroom. The drummer also needs a useful balance of click, guide track and other musicians where applicable.
