Live session recording is different from rehearsing in front of a recorder. A professional live session must preserve the energy of a real performance while still giving the engineer enough control to mix, edit and deliver a release-ready result.
This guide explains what artists, bands, worship teams and performance groups in Nigeria should plan before recording a live session.
1. Decide what the session is for
A live session can serve different goals: a YouTube performance, worship release, acoustic session, audition piece, promotional content, live EP, documentary insert or social-media campaign.
The intended use determines how many songs to record, how polished the performance should be and whether video production is required.
2. Rehearse the arrangement before recording day
Live recording is less forgiving than isolated overdubbing. Confirm song structure, intros, endings, transitions, solos, dynamics and tempo before the session.
If the band still needs preparation time, use Rehearsal Sessions before booking the recording date.
3. Plan the input list
Create a clear list of every microphone, direct input and playback source. This may include vocals, drums, percussion, bass, guitars, keyboards, backing tracks, audience microphones and talkback.
A clean input plan makes setup faster and reduces routing problems.
4. Decide how isolated the instruments need to be
Some sessions benefit from musicians performing together in one room. Others need stronger separation for later mixing. The right choice depends on the music, room, microphone technique and how much post-production control is needed.
5. Plan monitoring for every performer
Musicians need to hear the right balance while performing. Confirm headphone, in-ear or floor-monitor requirements, and identify any performer who needs a custom mix.
Poor monitoring can create timing, pitch and confidence problems even when the musicians are well rehearsed.
6. Capture clean multitracks
Professional live sessions should record important sources separately whenever possible. Multitrack capture allows the engineer to balance vocals, drums, instruments and room sound after the performance without being locked into the live monitor mix.
For professional recording support, review Audio Production.
7. Treat room sound as part of the production
Room microphones can add energy, size and realism, but they must be positioned carefully. Too much uncontrolled room sound can reduce clarity, while too little can make a live performance feel sterile.
8. Record backup takes
Even strong performers benefit from multiple complete takes. Record enough versions to protect against missed lyrics, timing errors, technical issues or performance inconsistencies.
9. Coordinate video with audio
If the session will be filmed, plan camera positions, lighting, slate or sync methods, performance continuity and how many takes the video team needs.
For filmed sessions, Studio Shubz can combine audio capture with Film & Video Production.
10. Decide how much editing is acceptable
Some artists want the final release to remain almost completely live. Others allow timing edits, vocal comping, tuning, drum replacement or overdubs. Agree on the philosophy before post-production begins.
11. Plan the mix and master for the final platform
A live-session mix may need different treatment depending on whether it is for YouTube, streaming services, broadcast, social media or internal use.
Confirm whether mixing, mastering, video sync and final file delivery are included in the production scope.
12. Create more than one asset from the session
A single live recording day can produce a full performance, vertical clips, teaser edits, still frames, short social excerpts and promotional assets. Planning these outputs before the session increases the value of the production.
